About SAREA
The South Australian Rock-climbing Education Association Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation established in the 1980’s to ensure safe practice and quality rock-climbing instruction in South Australia. SAREA has a representative Board, and an Assessor and Advisory Panel.
An outline of the SAREA Rock Climbing Instructor program can be found in the current BROCHURE (the current dates in brochure are 2010, see below for 2011 dates)

SAREA Meetings
SAREA Board an AA panel meetings are now held at Recreation SA (900 South Rd, EDWARDSTOWN, SA, 5039) bimonthly on the second wednesday of the month.
2011 dates are: 15 Jun, 10 August, 12 October, 14 December
Rock-climbing Instructor Program
The South Australian Rock-climbing Education Association (SAREA) has been serving South Australia since 1981, and was established to assist competent rock-climbers gain skills and accreditation to become guides and instructors.
The SAREA rock-climbing instructor program will not teach you how to climb. You will need to gain this experience through either community agencies, private organizations, clubs or training institutions.
You must have climbing experience before you start the program – to at least ‘Assistant Instructor’ standard.
SAREA has 6 awards:
- Assistant Top Rope Instructor
- Tope Rope Guide (restricted)
- Top Rope Instructor
- Lead Climbing Instructor
- Assessor
- Single pitch abseil guide (available by request only)
SAREA consists of a volunteer training panel and a board, with meetings approx once every 2 months to conduct the business of the organization.
The SAREA rock-climbing instructor program is supported by Regency Institute of TAFE.
Applications
You must be a competent to at least ‘Assistant Instructor’ standard, as outlined in the SAREA log book (available below). You must send a log book electronically to SAREA demonstrating a minimum of the following:
- 6 months climbing experience
- 500 metres of top rope climbing
- Competent to climb at least grade 12
- Competence with basic rope work, belaying and fixing anchors
- Completed 10 abseils
- Experience in a variety of cliff environments
Cost
$50 application fee. Course cost of $1000.
Aims of SAREA
The South Australian Rock-climbing Education Association Inc.
is a

The aims of the SAREA Board are:
- Standardise and advance rock-climbing education in South Australia.
- To formulate policies on safety standards and instructional qualifications for rock-climbing education.
- To facilitate and encourage training and assessment of rock-climbing instructors to the standards laid down by the Board
- To liaise with kindred associations, training establishments, and other organisations or institutions interested in rock-climbing instruction.
- To be able to act in an advisory capacity regarding the implementation of rock-climbing education programmes in South Australia.

- The Climbing Club of South Australia
- The Scout Association of Australia (S.A. Branch)
- Adelaide University Mountain Club and Flinders University Wilderness Club
- The National Parks and Wildlife Service (N.P.W.S.A)
- The Education Department (S.A.)
- South Australian Private Schools
- Commercial interests in South Australia
- Rescue Organisations, (STAR Force, S.E.S.)
- TAFE – SA Department of Education Employment and Training
- Outdoor Educators Association of South Australia
The board may, from time to time, nominate additional organisations to be included in this list, or may revoke the inclusion of any organisation.
