The C.C.S.A. has been in existence for about 25 years, and is the only organisation in the state to represent recreational climbers. SAREA, the other main climbing organization, represents rock climbing instructors. The CCSA has a place on the SAREA board of management. The Club was set up in 1968, originally for the interests of climbers who had left the Adelaide University Mountain Club, but soon broadened to welcome all climbers. It has gone through several cycles of popularity and decline, and is once again expanding.

The Club serves as a meeting point and voice for individual recreational climbers, in dealing with National Parks, private landowners and other authorities.

It had re-opened access to Norton Summit when the land owners banned climbing there six years ago. It has negotiated with National Parks for continued access to the cliffs at Waitpinga, and had a significant input to the Management Plan for the area. The Club has helped with landscaping and erosion prevention, clearance of non-native weeds and trees,eg blackberries and olives, from the cliff areas at Morialta Conservation Park, and recently has helped with revegetation there and at Norton Summit. It has maintained an ongoing contact with the new owners of Buckaringa. Five years ago, the Club had erected the notice board at Morialta, and provided $500 for signage and the steps that the Club installed on the track at Norton Summit. It helped pay for the new water tank at Moonarie.

It has published BOLFA, the newsletter and magazine, currently on hiatus.

The Moonarie guides have been a particular strength for the Club. It has produced six editions during the thirty years that climbers have been visiting this excellent cliff at Wilpena Pound. The latest guide was released in October 2000, with six hundred described climbs plus a bouldering section.

It is an opportunity to meet friends or make contacts, and find out what's new in the scene. The Club arranges climbing days on local cliffs but does not have the individual or legal resources to instruct climbing. We recommend the commercial climbing instruction organisations for this service.

The Club meets on the first Monday of even months e.g Feb, April, June etc, at the Robin Hood Hotel, 315 Portrush Road, Norwood.
